The Types of Cases I Love to Handle: Niche Companies
One of the most interesting things in patent law is to represent the niche company – a company that has a niche technology. I’m Rich Beem. I’m a patent attorney in Chicago and I like representing niche companies. Your company may be the leader in your particular niche field. It may be that very few people in the world even understand what your industry is, what your technology is. And now you have competitors that are trying to inch their way in. Patents can be a very important, competitive tool to help you keep your leadership, to help you benefit from the technology that you’ve developed by getting the exclusive right to that technology for twenty years from the filing date of the patent application. It may be that you’re developing new technology and you’re threatening the competitor that is leading in your particular niche. Those are fun situations, too. And again, it’s important to establish a patent portfolio starting with the first patent application – the first invention - that you want to protect. What do you have that is new that is going to revolutionize your industry? You want to file a patent application on that because that is going to be your entrée into leadership into your particular niche. You have a niche technology, whether you’re in a small company that is leading in your field, or whether you’re an entrepreneurial part of a large company. You must have questions on how the patent process works and how to get patents that will improve your competitive position. I have answers to those questions. I work as a patent lawyer, I’ve been doing this for 25 years and I have really enjoyed representing companies in niche technologies.
